About
We build for the lakes, and the homes along them.

Shoal builds custom cabinets and finish carpentry. We work across Muskoka, Parry Sound and Georgian Bay. Kitchens, millwork, built ins, stairs and trim. A lot of it goes into cottages you can only reach by boat.
Boat access changes the job. We know which finishes last in a cottage that sits closed all winter. We know a year round home is not the same as one opened in May. And we know what it costs to leave a part on the mainland.
We take on a small number of jobs a year. That keeps Dave on every one of them, from the first drawing to the last piece of trim.
The name comes from the bay. A shoal is the shallow ridge just under the water. Every local knows where they sit. It felt right for a trade built on reading the water.
How we work
Drawn for the room, and installed by the people who built it.
Most jobs start with a talk and a set of plans. If the space is already built, we walk it with you. Then we draw the millwork and settle on materials and finishes. And we give you a build window we can hold.
Everything is built to order. We dry fit it in the shop before it travels, so the fit is right before it leaves. Our own crew does the install. If something needs a tweak a season later, we come back.

The founder
A note from Dave.
I have been working in this industry for over twenty years, and my passion for carpentry started way back when I was still in high school. I had the privilege of learning alongside some of the best finish carpenters going, on high end resort homes, hotels and restaurants, and that is the standard I have built to ever since.
Whether it is pulling on a pair of waders to hit the water for some fall fishing, or waking up to a fresh dump of snow and getting the sled out, the view off the end of the dock never gets old. Getting to work on beautiful homes and cottages out here, for great clients, has been a rewarding thing to do for a living.
Being surrounded by the material I work with in the Cottage Country, and living so close to the material I work with each day, gives me a real appreciation for the finish carpentry & custom cabinetry. I take a great deal of care displaying each piece's natural beauty in its final resting place. There is nothing else I would rather be doing.
